Lesson timetable

Learning outcomes

The course will touch upon the structures of the European Union (EU), the basic freedoms (of circulation of goods, services, capitals and persons) as core matter of the single market. It will then concentrate on the study of EU competition law and policy, with a special focus on rules and cases directly relevant in the field of information and the internet; in this field, a special attention will be given to Microsoft’s contentious cases before the Tribunal of First Instance and the Court of Justice of the European Communities.

Syllabus

All classes are taught in English and will be devoted to the direct examination of relevant legal instruments and the discussion of cases and legal issues arising in relation thereto. The course will benefit by the participation of Dott. Assimakis Komninos – currently involved before the Court of First Instance in Microsoft v. Commission (compulsory licensing of interoperability information - abuse of dominance) – as guest lecturer within the Project of International Cooperation aimed at the Internationalization of the University of Verona.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students’ preparation will be tested through an oral examination.
Students who attended the course can prepare on the basis of their notes and materials which will be made available on the course web site. Their oral test will be in English.
Students who did not attend the course should prepare on the basis of the following textbook: L. PROSPERETTI et al., Economia e diritto antitrust. Un’introduzione, Roma, Carocci editore, 2006, 17-280 e 339-368. They will take their exam in Italian.
